The
Chipaya Language Project
Chipaya [cap] is an Uru-Chipaya language
spoken by 1,000-1,500 people in the
southern highlands of Bolivia. Chipaya
speakers are undergoing shift to Spanish
and Central Aymara. During the filming
of The Linguists, Living Tongues worked
with some of the remaining speakers of
Chipaya to record sample lexical and
grammatical materials as well several
long ethnographic texts on various
topics of considerable detail. Funding
is required to give these texts the time
and analysis they deserve. Consultant
names withheld by request.
